چکیده

This paper describes an exercise in the formalization of common-sense with Answer Set Programming aimed at solving an interesting riddle, whose solution is not obvious to many people. Solving the riddle requires a considerable amount of common-sense knowledge and sophisticated knowledge representation and reasoning techniques, including planning and adversarial reasoning. Most importantly, the riddle is difficult enough to make it unclear, at a first analysis, whether and how Answer Set Programming or other formalisms can be used

Commonsense Knowledge Representation I

Significant advances in artificial intelligence, including machines that play master level chess, or make medical diagnoses, highlight an intriguing paradox. While systems can compete with highly qualified experts in many fields, there has been much less progress in constructing machines that exhibit simple commonsense, the kind expected of any normally intelligent child. As a result, commonsen...

Commonsense Knowledge Representation II

Early attempts to implement systems that understand commonsense knowledge did so for very restricted domains. For example, the Planes system [Waltz, 1978] knew real world facts about a fleet of airplanes and could answer questions about them put to it in English. It had, however, no behaviors, could not interpret the facts, draw inferences from them or solve problems, other than those that have...

Ethnomethodology and Conversational Analysis

In a speech community, people utilize their communicative competence which they have acquired from their society as part of their distinctive sociolinguistic identity. They negotiate and share meanings, because they have commonsense knowledge about the world, and have universal practical reasoning. Their commonsense knowledge is embodied in their language. Thus, not only does social life depend...

Conservative and Reward-driven Behavior Selection in a Commonsense Reasoning Framework

Comirit is a framework for commonsense reasoning that combines simulation, logical deduction and passive machine learning. While a passive, observation-driven approach to learning is safe and highly conservative, it is limited to interaction only with those objects that it has previously observed. In this paper we describe a preliminary exploration of methods for extending Comirit to allow safe...

Learning Commonsense Knowledge from the Interpretation of Individual Experiences

To understand human intelligence, we need to discover how we learn commonsense knowledge. We humans are able to infer generalizations of knowledge, make predictions about the future, and answer questions based on what we’ve experienced. In this thesis I present a method for performing these commonsense tasks in an artificial intelligence system. I introduce a data type called a chain which clus...
